Tape Pressure Widget
Overview
The Tape Pressure widget translates shifts in cumulative volume delta (CVD) into audio cues and visual indicators so you can hear and see when the market transitions from buying to selling pressure and back again. It monitors the difference between contracts traded at the offer and those traded at the bid and highlights meaningful order‑flow imbalances. Unlike the Trade Sounds widget, which plays a sound for every trade at the bid or ask, Tape Pressure focuses on the direction and acceleration of order flow. Sounds are still driven by trades, but are instead filtered based on the imbalance of CVD, and direction is assigned to the buying or selling context. Traders find this widget useful as a leading indication of buying or selling momentum shifts in real time.
The widget provides multiple visual display options through interchangeable gadgets. The default display is a radial gauge showing current tape pressure state with a color-coded arc and needle indicator. The gauge provides an at-a-glance view of whether buying or selling pressure is dominating. You can also switch to a specialized Tape Pressure Indicator for detailed pressure visualization, or view the Time & Sales table to see the actual trades driving the pressure shifts.
Stereo panning makes it easy to hear the direction of pressure: by default, buying pressure plays in your right ear and selling pressure in your left ear. The pitch of each sound can follow price (rising or falling as price moves) or remain fixed, giving you another layer of information about momentum. You can launch Tape Pressure into its own browser tab and minimise individual widgets or the entire dashboard for a compact layout.

- Widget Controls: Each widget has a mute icon (speaker) for silencing that widget, a launch icon for opening the Time & Sales or a chart in a new tab, and an X to close it. Global Mute All and Minimise controls in the dashboard header mute or minimise all widgets at once.
- Context‑Menu Minimise: Right‑click on the launch icon to minimise a single Tape Pressure widget or restore it to full size.
What It Shows
The Tape Pressure widget provides real-time feedback on order flow imbalance through both audio and visual indicators. The display adapts based on which gadget you've selected:
Radial Gauge (Default)
- Gauge Position: The needle position and arc color indicate the current tape pressure state (0-6 scale)
- Color Coding: Green/yellow (balanced to slight buying), orange (moderate pressure), red (strong pressure)
- Volume Signal Label: Text indicator showing pressure context (e.g., "< typical", "> median", "≫ recent")
Tape Pressure Indicator
- Specialized visualization showing buying vs. selling pressure with detailed pressure metrics
- Visual intensity reflecting the magnitude of recent CVD changes
- Direction indicators for immediate recognition of pressure shifts
Time & Sales Table
- Trade-by-trade display showing actual executions driving the pressure
- Price, size, and side information for each trade
- Scrollable history of recent market activity
Visual Display Modes
The Tape Pressure widget supports multiple interchangeable visual displays through a gadget system. You can switch between different displays based on your preference and screen space:
Switching Displays
- Right-click on the widget's main indicator area to open the gadget context menu
- Select from available displays:
- Radial Gauge - Clean, at-a-glance pressure state visualization (default)
- Tape Pressure Indicator - Specialized pressure metrics and visual intensity
- Time & Sales - Full trade table (available in expanded layout)
- Your selection is automatically saved with the widget
Popout Options
From the same right-click context menu, you can launch additional windows:
- Popout Time & Sales - Opens the trade table in a separate browser tab
- Launch Chart - Opens a price chart for the current symbol in a new tab
These popout windows remain synchronized with your widget's symbol and update in real-time.
Layout Considerations
- Full Layout: All gadget options are available, including Time & Sales table
- Compact Layout: Optimized gadgets only (Radial Gauge, Tape Pressure Indicator)
- Minimized Mode: Widget collapses to show minimal information; toggle the minimize button to restore
Quick Start
- Open the widget: On the PriceSquawk dashboard, click Tape Pressure under Widgets. A new Tape Pressure widget appears on the dashboard. If the widget is minimised, click the global Minimise toggle in the dashboard header (or right‑click the launch icon and choose Minimise) to expand it.
- Select a symbol: Click inside the Select symbol field and choose a trading instrument (e.g. ESU25 for E‑mini S&P 500 Futures). Only one symbol per Tape Pressure widget can be selected. You can add additional Tape Pressure widgets for other symbols from the Widgets menu.
- Start listening: As soon as you choose a symbol, the widget begins analysing order‑flow data. The radial gauge needle will start moving and the arc will change color as pressure shifts between buying and selling. Sounds will start playing; with stereo enabled, selling pressure plays in the left ear and buying pressure in the right.
- Open settings: Click the gear icon in the bottom‑right of the widget to open Tape Pressure Settings. Use the drop‑down menus and toggles to adjust Delta Sensitivity, select sounds for Buying Pressure and Selling Pressure, choose a Pitch Mode, set an Aggregate Volume, and change Sound Duration. Hovering over the small “i” icons reveals tooltips describing each parameter.
- Recalculate: After changing Aggregate Volume, click Calculate to calculate and apply the new aggregation values.
- Use patches: From the settings panel, choose Select a Patch to load a saved configuration or click Save to store your current setup for later use.
- Switch displays (optional): Right-click on the widget's indicator area to access the gadget menu. Choose a different visual display or launch popout windows for Time & Sales or Chart.
- Mute and minimise: Use the speaker icon on the widget footer to mute or unmute that widget. The dashboard's Mute All toggle silences all widgets. Click the minimize button to collapse or expand the widget; use the global Minimise toggle to affect all widgets at once.
- Close the widget: Click the X button in the widget footer to remove it from the dashboard.
Prerequisites
- An active PriceSquawk subscription with access to market data for the chosen symbol.
- A modern web browser and stable Internet connection.
- Speakers or (preferably) headphones for clearer stereo separation.
- Basic understanding of cumulative volume delta and order‑flow concepts.
Basic Setup
- Patch Selection (optional): If you’ve previously saved a Tape Pressure configuration, choose it from Select a Patch in the settings panel. Otherwise, continue with the defaults.
- Delta Sensitivity: Choose Low, Mid or High. High sensitivity will flip between buying and selling pressure more frequently; Low filters out small fluctuations.
- Buying/Selling Pressure Sounds: Pick distinct sounds from the drop‑downs (e.g. woodblock for buys and footsteps for sells) so it’s easy to differentiate the two types of pressure.
- Pitch Mode: Select Price to tie the pitch of sounds to price changes (higher pitch when price rises, lower when price falls) or Fixed to keep the pitch constant.
- Aggregate Volume: Enter a number (≥ 1) to aggregate trades. A value of 10 plays one sound per 10 contracts traded. Press Calculate after changing this value to reset it to a sensible value based on recent trading data.
- Sound Duration: Shorter durations produce rapid, staccato sounds; longer durations lengthen each sound played which can be used to customize the character of sounds.
** TIP ** You can reduce the number of sounds played with the Aggregate setting and lengthen the sound to make it more prominent. Not all sounds can be lengthend beyond their default, so experiment with the sound library.
- Enable Stereo: Toggle on to send buying and selling sounds to separate speakers; toggle off for mono output across both speakers.
- Volume: Adjust the overall volume with the slider at the bottom of the settings panel.
- Save Your Patch: When satisfied, click Save (next to Select a Patch) to store these settings. You can recall them later from the drop‑down.
Sensitivity and Volume Delta Explained
Tape Pressure detects changes in cumulative volume delta rather than the absolute value. Volume delta is the difference between contracts traded at the offer and contracts traded at the bid. A positive shift (delta becoming less negative or more positive) produces a buying pressure sound and illuminates the right (blue) squares; a negative shift produces a selling pressure sound and lights up the left (red) squares. The louder the sound and the more squares illuminated, the greater the shift.
The Delta Sensitivity setting determines how sensitive the widget is to these changes. Use Low if you only want to hear major shifts; choose High to catch even small changes. Adjust Aggregate Volume to smooth noisy markets; higher values aggregate more contracts before producing a sound.
Audio Output
Sound Characteristics
- Buying Pressure sound: Plays when cumulative volume delta shifts positively; intensity (volume) increases with the magnitude of the shift. Choose a percussive sound like a woodblock or bell for clarity.
- Selling Pressure sound: Plays when volume delta shifts negatively; louder sounds indicate stronger selling pressure. Low‑frequency sounds (footsteps, kick drum) work well to differentiate selling pressure.
- Stereo separation: When enabled, buying pressure is panned to the right channel and selling pressure to the left. Use headphones for best separation.
- Pitch Mode: With Price mode selected, the pitch of both sounds rises and falls with price movement; with Fixed, pitch remains constant.
Listening Guidelines
- Use headphones to clearly separate left (selling) and right (buying) channels.
- Map sounds to your trading actions: For example, sustained selling sounds while price rallies may suggest a shorting opportunity; persistent buying sounds confirm a long bias.
- Watch for divergences: The most powerful signals occur when price and audio disagree (e.g. selling pressure while price rises or buying pressure while price falls).
- Combine with other widgets: Tape Pressure works well alongside Tape Signal for also hearing overall volume momentum, and the Price Squawk Last Trade mode for audible price announcement as context to the order flow.

Configuration Examples
High‑Frequency Order‑Flow Trading
- Delta Sensitivity: High – react quickly to small pressure shifts.
- Aggregate Volume: 1 or 2 – minimal aggregation so each change plays a sound.
- Sounds: Short, percussive tones (e.g. tick‑tock vs. snap) to clearly differentiate buys and sells.
- Pitch Mode: Price – hear price momentum via pitch changes.
- Stereo: On – separate buying and selling pressure into different ears.
Swing or Position Trading
- Delta Sensitivity: Low – filter out minor fluctuations; focus on major shifts.
- Aggregate Volume: 5–10 – aggregate volume to smooth noise.
- Sounds: Gentle tones that are unobtrusive over long periods.
- Pitch Mode: Fixed – rely on intensity rather than pitch changes.
- Stereo: Optional – stereo can be turned off if listening over speakers.
Bias Confirmation
After entering a trade, continue listening for signals in the direction of your position. For example, if you are long and continue to hear blue buying‑pressure cues while the right column intensifies, this can add confirmation for your trade; if red selling‑pressure sounds start dominating, consider tightening your stop or exiting.
Use Cases and Trading Scenarios
Spotting Divergence
Tape Pressure excels at detecting divergence between order flow and price. A bearish divergence occurs when price is rising but the left (selling) column lights up and selling sounds intensify; this may signal an upcoming reversal. A bullish divergence occurs when price is falling but buying pressure dominates.
Timing Trades & Managing Positions
Use the intensity of Tape Pressure signals to time entries and exits. Enter trades when the audio divergence aligns with your strategy. Hold a position as long as audio confirms your bias. Quiet periods with few sounds may indicate market indecision or consolidation.
Risk Management
Loud, frequent selling‑pressure sounds while you are long (or vice versa) warn of growing imbalance against your position which can be used as decision support for tightening stops, reducing exposure.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound from Tape Pressure | Widget or dashboard muted; volume slider at 0; browser audio blocked | Ensure the widget’s speaker icon is unmuted, verify Mute All is off, increase the volume slider, and check browser permissions. |
| Bars not animating / no signals | No symbol selected or data feed disconnected | Select a symbol using the Select symbol box; verify your internet connection and subscription. |
| Too many sounds (noisy) | Delta Sensitivity too high; Aggregate Volume too low | Lower Delta Sensitivity or increase Aggregate Volume; use Low sensitivity for slower markets. |
| Can’t tell buy vs sell sounds | Using mono audio or similar‑sounding instruments | Enable Stereo and choose distinct sounds for buying and selling pressure; use headphones. |
| Pitch changes are distracting | Pitch Mode set to Price | Switch to Fixed to keep pitch constant. |
| Widget disappears | Widget closed or minimised | Click Tape Pressure under Widgets to add a new widget; check the global Minimise toggle or right‑click the launch icon and choose *Maximise*. |
